The Mew Trick
- This cheat requires the Red, Blue, or Yellow version. I only tested it on the Red and Blue versions, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on Yellow, and enough other people on the internet say it works on Yellow, so I think it is a safe enough assumption. So, after you've fished your R/B/Y version out of your drawer and blown the dust out of it, first of all, you will most likely need to restart the game, seeing as, for this cheat to work, there are certain trainers that you had to not battle along the way.
- Okay, for a while, just play the game as normal. Make sure that you do not battle the following trainers: the boy trainer facing north on the way to Bill's house, and the old man trainer facing north on the way between Lavender Town and Celadon City.
- In Celadon City, stop at the Department Store and pick up some Great Balls. Also make sure that you have enough room in your box on the PC for when you catch Mew. Alright, all set? Then cut through Celadon and get the Fly HM from the girl in the secret retreat over Cycling Road. Teach Fly to a Pokemon.
Next, cut back through Celadon City and go into the underground passage. I recommend that you save inside the underground passage just in case you mess up, because if you do, you'll need to restart the game all over again. And that would be bad.
Exit the Underground Passage house, but DON'T MOVE!
- Okay, you are just above the old man that I told you not to battle before. Get ready, this might take a few attempts. What you need to do is take one step south and hit the start button so that the menu pops up. If you did it right, you'll see the old man. He's just standing there for now, but if you didn't hit the start button right, he would have wanted to battle you. The thing is, YOU CANNOT battle him. So, hopefully if you did that right, you'll see the old man, but the menu will be open, like this:
- Got it? Okay. Now you need to go to your Pokemon Menu on the Menu list, and select the Pokemon that you taught fly. Tell it to fly to Cerulean City.
- The old man will suddenly see you, but you'll be flying away before he can do anything about it. Cool, huh? In Cerulean City, go up the bridge and head towards Bill's house. Make sure you don't battle anyone along the way. Stop just before you get to the boy I told you not to battle before.
- Make sure that you are far enough away from the boy, so that when he sees you, he'll have to walk up to get to you. If he doesn't walk up to get to you, your game supposedly will freeze and everything will be messed up.
- Battle and defeat the boy. He will use a Slowpoke. Fighting this Slowpoke will be what makes Mew appear later. It has something to do with that particular Slowpoke's Special Statistic being 21. I don't understand it, but it works.
- Immediately after defeating the trainer, fly to Lavender Town. Beneath the PokeCenter and to the west, there is a narrow path. Head along that path.
- Suddenly, you will be stopped and the Menu will pop up. Just hit B and it will go away. Then, out of nowhere, you will be attacked. It will be a level seven Mew. I don't think you need me to tell you this, but CATCH IT!

And there you have it! A Mew! Your very own little Mew for you to nurture and train! And Nintendo said it couldn't be done! Oh and, just a note, this glitch will let you catch other Pokemon, too, by fighting Pokemon with different specials instead of the Slowpoke. For instance, to get a level 7 Mewtwo, you'll need to encounter a Pokemon with Special 131 (to make life easy, train one of your Pokemon to Special 131 and fight a Ditto in place of the Slowpoke trainer). Although it would be kinda neat to be able to train a baby Mewtwo from level 7, you can get all the other Pokemon naturally, so all I really care about using this cheat for is Mew. *grins and squeezles my newly caught Mew.*

NOTE: I checked it out for myself, and as far as I can tell, this glitch was not carried over to Fire Red and Leaf Green. =(
