Combined Pokedex Data: This vicious psychic Pokemon was created solely for fighting by a scientist after years after horrific experiments on genes and DNA. Its genetic material is almost the same as Mew's, but its size and disposition are vastly different. Since its fighting abilities were raised to the ultimate level, it thinks only of defeating its foes. Therefore, it usually sits motionless in an undiscovered cave to conserve its energy for battle. Its cold, glowing eyes strike fear into its enemies.

Pokemon Mansion Diary: Mewtwo is far too powerful. We have failed to curb its vicious tendencies...

Mewtwo: Mew...where are you going? Are you saying that you won't even talk to a copy like me? Is that right? Mew, show yourself to me. Show me who's stronger!

For the early part of Mewtwo's life, he became obsessed with fighting, partly from being under the control of Giovanni, and partly for the need to prove himself. His main goal was to defeat Mew, and prove that he was more than a mere shadow of a legend. He often dreamed of Mew taunting him, and one of his main motivations for joining with Giovanni was to force Mew to give him the proper attention and respect he deserved. It worked -- Mew sensed something and sought out New Island where Mewtwo was hiding. After an intense battle, Mewtwo and Mew decided that there was no point to fighting. Clone or not, they are equals.

Birthdate: February 6 (according to the Diaries found in Cinnabar Mansion)

Origins:

Giovanni: Pokemon are what makes money. (Laughs) And to add to that, it's said that the phantom Mew is the rarest Pokemon in the world. If it's recreated in this laboratory, and is in our possession...even if it's a copy we'll make a fortune. Even if it's a fake we'll make a fortune.

Mewtwo was cloned from the DNA found in a fossilized eyelash from Mew that was discovered in the Amazon Jungle by Team Rocket. Giovanni and his mother before him were obsessed with finding Mew. When Miyamoto's expedition failed and Mew was lost, Giovanni decided on getting the next best thing: a clone.

Dr. Fuji: The looks and figure may be slightly different, but we have done everything we can. Maybe this Mewtwo has even stronger powers than Mew.

A commonly believed theory is that the scientists who created Mewtwo spliced other DNA, besides Mew's, into Mewtwo's genetic code. Donors were most likely a human and possibly an Alakazam. You can see the effects of such alterations in Mewtwo. His psychic aura is blue like Alakazam's, rather than pink like Mew's. Mewtwo also has similar hands, eyes, nose, and ears as Alakazam. Mewtwo also received humanoid features, like his chest and basic structure. Mew's genes are still prominent, however, in Mewtwo's legs, feet, tail, and head.

Early Life:

Mewtwo: Ai, I...I want to know more...and more!

When Mewtwo was first created, he was perhaps as innocent, playful, and curious as Mew. His mind, from his first moments of conscienceness, is bursting with questions. Where is this place? Who am I? Why am I here? When Mewtwo meets a fellow, although human, clone named Ai (or Amber in the dub) all his questions are answered, about everything from the sun and the moon, to cake and milk.

Things start going wrong very quickly in Mewtwo's life, causing him to develop into his depressive and violent self. It all started when Ai died, who degenerated after four years within her tube, not strong enough to survive the imperfect cloning process. Mewtwo, not understanding death, felt abandoned as Ai disappeared and no longer answered his questions. In addition, he could hear Dr. Fuji indifferently state that he could merely create another copy, holding no respect for individual life and treating a living being as an object. Further resentment against humans developed when he, too, was treated as a mere experiment by the scientists. He violently lashed out against them, destroying the people and the laboratory that gave birth to him. Later, Mewtwo's hatred against humans was sealed when he learned he was tricked and used by Giovanni. Mewtwo lashed out against humans until Ash proved to him that not all people are bad.

Search for Purpose:

Mewtwo: I was created by humans, but I'm not a human. Since I was a created Pokemon, I'm not even a Pokemon!

Mewtwo is very philosophical. He wonders about deep questions, such as the meaning of life, and his purpose as a clone. He does not understand his role in life, because he isn't natural, and is a mere human science experiment. He feels that he is like an alien to the plan for the world. Mewtwo is very sensitive to the course of his destiny. He refuses to be an experiment or a slave to humans. He can no longer protect the other clones. Mewtwo longs for a purpose and to make his existence mean something, but at the same time doubts if this is even possible for a clone.

Sightings:

• New Island Laboratory - Where Mewtwo was created, as detailed in The Birth of Mewtwo CD Drama and The First Movie. In the video game, Mewtwo is created on the Cinnabar Island Laboratory, where fossils can be used to create living Pokemon (i.e. clones)
• Team Rocket Headquarters - Giovanni tricks Mewtwo into joining him, and uses him to further Team Rocket's Pokemon exploits
• The Viridian City Gym - Mewtwo is also used by Giovanni to defeat several opponents in his gym, including Gary Oak, before he rebels and escapes.
• The Unknown Dungeon / Cerulean Cave Mewtwo spends time hiding in this cavern, and can be encountered here in the Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green versions of the video game.
• New Island Ruins In the First Movie, Mewtwo goes back to the place where he was created to build his fortress and stage his counterattack against mankind and the world.
• Mount Quena - In Mewtwo Returns, Mewtwo and his fellow clones, presumably aided by Mew, hide in this secluded and nearly unreachable area where they can be safe from humans
• An Unknown City - Possibly Tokyo or New York, Mewtwo is seen in a city wearing a cool-looking cape.

Friends:

• Mew - This seems to be a sort of at-odds friendship. They were first seen together neutrally during the Kanto Opening. Then, of course, were against each other during much of the First Movie, before the end when Mew leads Mewtwo and the clones to safety. Then, during the Jhoto Opening, they are together somewhat neutrally, although Mewtwo seems a little annoyed. In Jhoto Champion's Opening, they seem much more comfortable together, and then during Master Quest, Mewtwo calmly observes Mew from a distance. During the next opening, however, Mew and Mewtwo are back to attacking each other. So, I dunno, I suppose we can just say they're sort of friends now.
• Pikatwo and Meowtwo - In Mewtwo Returns, Mewtwo seems to be particularly close to these clones, spending time with just the two of them, rather than the whole crowd of clones
• Ash - Mewtwo does seem to hold a sort of respect for Ash as the one who showed him not all humans are bad, forced him to see that battling to prove superiority between clones and originals is pointless, saved him from Giovanni's glowy ball of torture, and healed him in the lake.
• Lugia - I like the idea of Mewtwo and Lugia hanging out, although I was probably mostly influenced by Chibi Kitties
