This is a mythical Pokemon of South America, thought to be extinct. A small but growing number of people have seen it, although many experts claim this very rare Pokemon is just a mirage. Mew is believed to be capable of making itself invisible at will, and it apparently appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it. Mew is said to have short, fine, delicate hair that can only be viewed under a microscope. Its DNA contains the genetic codes of all Pokemon. Due to this fact, some believe it is the ancestor of all Pokemon. It is very intelligent and can learn all Pokemon moves.
Learning Pattern: Mew has the opportunity to learn a new move upon turning a level that is divisible by 10 (level 10, level 20, level 30, etc).
Attacking Style:
Mew is a very mysterious creature. She is very wise, playful, and curious. She is normally peaceful and carefree, tending to avoid battles, instead sticking to dodging attacks when this is a sufficient means of defending herself. Yet when driven to anger she is very powerful, perhaps the strongest Pokemon in the world.

Dr. Fuji: Mew is said to be the world's rarest Pokemon. According to a legend, it's even said that it has a life-force to let it live forever.
Mew is presumed to be immortal. This allows her to find, explore, examine, and eventually learn everything. Although she behaves innocently and playfully, Mew obviously is very smart. She seems to peer at everything, and gather as much information as possible about her surroundings before revealing herself or taking action.
Origins:
Giovanni: (Narrating as sounds of falling stars and explosions are heard) Space...never ending space. When did space begin? Nothing is known in space...never ending space. When did space begin? Nothing is known in detail. However, once upon a time, at the ends of space, in the galactic system...in one of the solar galaxies, a creature was born...it evolved...humans were born...and again, another time a new creature was born. More than a hundred species of this new creature was born, and eventually people called these mysterious creatures pocket monsters, or Pokemon for short. The Pokemon did not stop at a hundred kinds. As time went on, new Pokemon were found one after the other.
It is possible that the Pokemon Giovanni is talking about was Mew (or a colony of Mews), who came to Earth from outer space before humans were even around. Slowly they mutated and evolved into all the hundreds of Pokemon we know today. Perhaps this is why Mew knows transform. Very few, in fact, maybe even only one Mew (like I believe) did not evolve. Although this is supported by the PokeDex entry that says Mew is the ancestor of all Pokemon and the episode in which we discovered that Pokemon are aliens, it is pretty much my theory.
Previous Locations:
Amazon Jungle - In The First Movie, Mew is seen watching the explorers. According to the Birth of Mewtwo CD Drama, she has built up enough of a reputation among the natives there that they have built a shrine to her
The Andes Mountains - In the CD Drama, Miyamoto tracks and then finds Mew there. She also is said to appear on the peak each New Year to bring luck to the coming months
The Amazon River - Mew is seen in this river before she detects Mewtwo's power and flies to investigate
New Island Here, Mew confronts Mewtwo
Mount Quena In Mewtwo Returns, Mew is briefly seen swimming in the Clarity Lake after Mewtwo is thrown in, although this may have been merely a product of Mewtwo's mind
Border of Lavender Town - Due to a video game glitch, Mew can be spotted here in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions
World's Edge Island/Faraway Island - In the Emerald verison, Mew can be found in this area (Which can only be reached after going to an official Nintendo event or Wonderspot)

Role as a Protector:
Miyamoto: This Pokemon is the world's most rarest, and perhaps is strong, kind, and brave. It's a Pokemon to be thankful for because it watches over all of us.
Mew is a protector. I think in her journeys over the world, Mew also helps people. I believe that this is why Mew sought out Mewtwo's fortress. Not only did she sense great power, but also the impending catastrophe of Mewtwo's storm. Mew also clearly saved Ash's life when Mewtwo hurled him into the ceiling, and she might even have ensured Miyamoto's safty during the avalanche (although this is open to debate).
Friends:
Mewtwo - This seems to be a sort of at-odds friendship. They were first seen together neutrally during the Kanto Opening. They, of course, were against each other during the First Movie. Then, during the Jhoto Opening, they are together somewhat neutrally, although Mewtwo seems a little annoyed. In Jhoto Champion's Opening, they seem much more comfortably together, and then during Master Quest, Mewtwo calmly observes Mew from a distance. During the next opening, however, Mew and Mewtwo are back to attacking each other.
Celebi - Mew and Celebi are just too much alike, in my mind, to not get along. They are also pictured together frequently, along with Jirachi. The picture to the right is from PokePark (I believe it's a design on an Edy card)
Jirachi - Mew and Jirachi are also very much alike and pictured together often. Theycan be seen flying together quite happily during the Eighth Opening of the Anime, even with an epic battle between Groudon and Kyogre raging nearby
Rukario - Based on what information we have on the upcoming Pokemon movie, Mew is the only Pokemon that "understands" Rukario. Is this meant in the sense of language, or emotions? Also, based on the trailer, it looks like Mew and Rukario may be fighting (Mew is surrounded in pink light, and it looks like she may be attacking a blue light, which may be Rukario, but it is hard to tell). I guess we'll have to just wait for the movie (or more information), and see.
Most other Pokemon, especially the Legendaries - Mew is just too nice for me to see her not making a lot of friends!
